Friends,
The JHS Community presented it's first Peace Day in the spring of 2018. Students and staff gathered and participated in workshops throughout the day. The program was such a success, that the Second Annual Peace Day will take place in May 2019! Please take a moment and read about Peace Day from its founder and organizer Maya Posecznick.
Peace Day 2018
Sometimes in our world, it seems hatred spreads faster than hope. We all tend to move our lips without listening to ourselves. We forget to be grateful. We forget to strive for goodness. We become hopeless. On November 21, however, I felt like our school came together as a positive, compassionate community. It was a good start to a hope-worthy future.
We came to the idea for the Peace Day project last year. Señor Detwiler and I began by discussing what kind of event it could be. There were lots of technical questions. Would we have it as an outdoor event? Would there be a key speaker? Many speakers? We decided to model it on Career Day and have students move with their homerooms from room to room. But we realized that it would be more in the spirit of Peace Day for students to choose how they spent their day. Maybe, that way, it would stick with them. There were lots of details to look after.
But there were other pressing questions for me as I began working on this project. Was it something we could accomplish? Would it be too much? Would others be interested? Could something like this make a difference? Would others care about what we were trying to accomplish? I was humbled and inspired by all of the teachers, staff, and students who came together to make Peace Day a reality.
We had one main speaker: Mr. David Tuck, a Holocaust survivor. There were twenty-four workshops running across the school, fourteen being run by guest organizations like Penn Futures, the United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia, and the Native American Awareness Group. We are all so grateful that these organizations were able to send representatives into our community -- they were really able to open up the world to us. And, of course, ten workshops were run by our members of our own community.
Señor Detwiler was an unbelievable resource and the engine behind the day. If you were to look closely, you would see his hand in everything that went on that day, for which I am so grateful. I am also grateful for Ms. Davidson’s help in planning and organizing the day and for Mr. Roller’s support from the very beginning. But honestly, the entire day could not have been possible without the teachers and staff who spent their time in an event as extensive as this one.
There were so many students at JHS who showed leadership and dedication. The Diversity Alliance and its peer leaders, Emily Dubin and Nicole Feist, were very helpful in making the day pass smoothly. I’m excited to see what they will achieve. By all accounts Delene Beauchamp, Adira Harris, Gabrielle Jackmon, Mike McGettigan, Julianna Reidell, Gabriel Rogers, and Julia Spoor did amazing jobs leading their own workshops. But most importantly, the biggest difference was made by the students of JMS/HS who walked into those rooms with open minds. You’ve all inspired me.
There will always be conflict. But there is a bigger picture, and a way that we can make a difference. We, the youth, will lead a brighter future, and experiences like these make me hopeful. Thank you to everyone in our Jenkintown community who made Peace Day possible.
